Why You Should Go To The ER After A Car Accident — Even If You Feel Okay

After being involved in a car accident, a million different things are running through your head. Any injuries you have suffered may be obvious, as you may be dealing with an intense amount of pain.

But if you have no pain and appear to have no injuries, you may be tempted to just walk away from the accident without seeing a doctor.

This is not a good idea.

At Brady & Jensen, LLP, we represent car accident victims — those with serious as well as minor injuries. We always encourage our clients to get the medical treatment they need. We urge you to get a full medical evaluation after a car accident, and here's why:

3 Reasons Why You Should See A Doctor After A Car Accident:

  • You may be injured, even if you have no pain: After an accident, your adrenaline is running. You may be in panic mode, trying to figure out what to do next, get the other driver's information, get out of the path of oncoming traffic, etc. In the midst of all this chaos, you may not even realize that you have been injured. But some symptoms of injuries may not appear at first. It is advisable to go to the ER as soon as you can after an accident. If not immediately after, go the next day. The point is — don't assume that you are not injured. Leave that up to your doctor to decide.
  • Your personal injury claim may be dependent on your doctor visit: If you are going to be filing a personal injury claim, medical documentation is essential. If you fail to go to the ER after your accident, or fail to seek medical attention, your case will not have the supporting evidence.
  • Your insurance company will try to settle your case: After your accident, your insurance company will contact you to get a statement and inquire about any injuries you have suffered. If you slight neck pain, for example, but have not seen your doctor yet, you may make a statement such as: "I have some minor neck pain, but it seems to be getting better." The insurance company may then offer you what seems to be a large amount of money for your pain and suffering. But when you wake up the next morning in excruciating pain — caused by the herniated disk in your neck — you cannot go back and change your story.
