Massive airbag recall underscores product liability concerns

Every day in Illinois and across the United States, scores of millions of consumers use products that they trust are both reliable and safe.

That trustworthiness -- that leap of faith, if you will -- is not casually given, with product users having much of a say in the matter; rather, it is an imperative in a world of mass-produced items often marked by great complexity in their design and manufacture.

A recent media article on defective airbags in passenger vehicles underscores the fallout that can occur when a product made in large quantities proves to be defective. As that story relates, many millions of airbags made by Japan’s Takata Corporation have the potential to greet vehicle occupants with a nasty surprise in the event of a crash or collision, namely this: They explode when deployed, shooting chunks of shrapnel at bodies.

Reportedly, that product dysfunction has led to fatal consequences in several instances, and led additionally to scores of serious injuries.

A huge airbag recall is currently underway to address the problem.

We certainly applaud that development at Brady & Jensen, LLP, although we lament that defective manufacturing so often necessitates its occurrence in the United States and across the world.

We note on our law firm’s website that, “With every product we use, we have the right to assume that the product will be safe for its intended uses.”

That has obviously not proven to be the case with millions of Takata’s airbags, and it can only be hoped that this outsized product liability concern is contained without further injuries to consumers.
