Dangerous children's toys on market this holiday season

With the holidays right around the corner, many Illinois children are eagerly awaiting their presents. While some will get books or clothes, many will get toys. These toys will help their parents keep these children busy during the long winter months. However, many parents may not realize how dangerous some of these toys can be.

According to an Illinois consumer protection group -- U.S. PIRG -- some toys on children's holiday wish lists are dangerous. The group has compiled its annual list of the most dangerous toys on the market. This year, the list of 24 toys includes everything from toy jewelry and accessories to balloons and magnets. Classical children character-themed toys have also made the list.

The group says the reasons for being dangerous are varied. Some have problems with their warning labels and others contain dangerous or illegal parts. For example, some toys contain powerful magnets that have been banned in the U.S., but can still be purchased online.

U.S. PIRG urges parents to be cautious about the toys that they allow their children to use. The group says that parents should make sure to inspect packaging and warning labels before children use the items. Previous toys on the group's annual list have led to more than 150 product recalls.

When products, including dangerous children's toys, cause injuries to Illinois consumers, people need to know that they may have the right to compensation. Manufacturers have the responsibility to only sell safe products. If products have defects that can cause injuries then these companies can be held responsible. Under products liability laws, these manufacturers could be held responsible for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more caused by the defective product.
