Man, 42, killed in truck accident on Chicago-area freeway

Few people anywhere in the country, including in the state of Illinois, expect to be in a traffic accident when they take to the road. In reality, though, accidents happen every day. Although most are minor accidents and people only sustain minor injuries, if any, a relatively small number of accidents injure and kill people in the blink of an eye.

One recent truck accident is a case in point. The late afternoon accident in heavy traffic on Interstate Highway 55 near Plainfield claimed the life of a 47-year-old Joliet man. According to Illinois State Police and a Plainfield Fire Department spokesperson, the 4:30 p.m. accident occurred when the driver of a stalled car was attempting to move his vehicle onto the shoulder of the northbound side when it was hit by a tractor-trailer. The car was crushed and the driver killed.

The collision initially left the semi on the top of the victim's car, but the driver was able to pull the truck off the smaller vehicle by the time fire crews arrived at the scene. The victim's body had to be cut out of his vehicle. The truck driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All northbound lanes of I-55 traffic were blocked, snarling traffic for hours. State police are continuing to investigate the accident. It is not known if charges will be filed against the truck driver.

In any truck accident causing injury or death, authorities will work to determine who was most at fault. If a truck driver is determined to have been most responsible, then he or she may be the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit. Liability for negligence also may be extended to the driver's employer. Given the complexity of such cases, it is generally wiser to use the services of an experienced attorney who can help obtain fair compensation.
