Excessive lead paint results in recall of baby furniture

Although the majority of product manufacturers do their best to bring safe products to market, some occasionally end up releasing products with dangerous defects. The flaws may be in the design, the manufacturing process or the materials used. Regardless of the cause, if a product harms someone, the manufacturer is liable for those injuries.

Recently, 4,600 baby cribs, manufactured by Baby's Dream Inc. of Georgia, were subject to a product recall due to product defects reported by several consumers. According to the federal Consumer Products Safety Commission, large amounts of lead paint were discovered on the cribs and on several other products marketed under various names, including the Everything Nice Collection, the Legendary Collection and the Braxton, Heritage and Brie brands.

Large amounts of lead when ingested can severely damage a baby's neurological development. In this case, although there were no reports of injuries to consumers, the dangers were deemed serious enough to require a recall. All customers have been urged by the company and the CPSC to exchange the defective products immediately.

The assorted furniture brands and collections included nearly 30 different types of cribs, nightstands, chests, hutches and bookcases that were manufactured in Chile from March 2014 to March 2015 and sold as Baby's Dream products in furniture stores as well as in the company's online store. It is not known when the excessive amounts of lead paint were first discovered. Details on the recalled products can be found on the company's website along with instructions on returning the items for exchange with safer products.

When a consumer suffers an injury from a product, the manufacturer can be held responsible and be forced to pay compensation to cover the consumer's financial losses. In some cases, punitive damages can be awarded if a manufacturer is determined to have acted irresponsibly.
