Approximately 14 people injured in truck accident

Truck drivers are usually commercial drivers who have been hired by the trucking company to carry heavy freight across the state lines or within the state. Truck drivers often have to travel at night after putting in long hours at work during the day.

Such driver fatigue, combined with other traffic violations, including drunk driving, driving while texting, speeding and driving while talking on the cell phone can often lead to a serious truck accident. Because of a truck's large size, in the event of a truck accident, the passengers of the other vehicles and pedestrians can suffer serious injuries, which sometimes even lead to fatalities.

Recently, approximately a dozen cars on an Illinois highway were involved in a truck accident when a tractor-trailer caused a rollover crash. At least 14 people were seriously injured due to the multiple vehicle accident that occurred at the crack of dawn.

The preliminary truck accident investigation revealed that the truck driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel. The truck driver had apparently been driving for more than 14 consecutive hours, which is a violation of the state laws that are enforced for commercial truck drivers. The truck driver was also issued six tickets for traffic law violations.

Trucking companies must abide by the various work-hour regulations specified under the "hours of service" regulations of the Department of Transportation. Federal laws also dictate that no truck driver can operate the vehicle continually for more than 11 consecutive hours. If a person was the victim of a similar truck accident due to driver fatigue, that person may wish to consult a lawyer to determine if it is wise to file a lawsuit or if the person even has the grounds to do so. The attorney can help the accident victim to thoroughly understand the case as well as the person's rights surrounding that case.
