Can more than one person be responsible for a car accident?

Illinois residents don't often think about the possibility of getting into a car accident while they are driving down the road. People like to think that they will be safe getting from point A to point B. However, the reality is that Illinois roads can be very dangerous. People can get into a car accident at any time and in any place.

When a car accident occurs, it's very important to determine what happened to cause the accident. Understanding why an accident occurred helps to give accident victims some closure, but it will also help determine who may be financially responsible for the accident. Under Illinois law, negligent drivers are responsible for the actual costs of an accident. But, when more than two cars are involved in a car accident, is it possible for more than one person to be held responsible for causing the accident?

When investigating an accident, it is possible to discover that multiple parties are responsible. In many cases, more than one driver was acting negligently before the accident occurred. For example, while one driver may be texting, another driver may have been speeding. In these cases, car accident victims can seek compensation from multiple parties.

In other words, car accident victims will have the opportunity to collect damages from any negligent party. This is often advantageous for victims since they have a higher chance of collecting full damages.

It is not always easy for car accident victims to determine whether or not negligence was responsible for causing an accident. This task becomes even more difficult when multiple cars are involved in a particular accident. A full investigation into the circumstances of the accident can help sort out who is responsible.
