What is a "never event?"

Illinois residents trust doctors to make the best decisions when it comes to their medical care. When you're sick, and you consult with the doctor, you expect the doctor to do their job. Doctors are expected to properly diagnose and treat medical issues to make a person better. However, this is not always what happens.

In some situations, doctors make serious medical errors that lead to an injury to a patient. Sometimes these are harmless mistakes. However, other times, they lead to serious medical issues for Illinois residents. Medical never even events are mistakes made by doctors that should never occur. These are events that have been identified as things that can be prevented with proper care.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, never events can be separated into six categories. These categories include criminal issues, radiologic issues, environmental issues, care management issues, patient protection issues, product or device issues and surgical issues.

There are also specific mistakes that have been defined as never events in each of these categories. For example, surgical never events include performing the wrong surgery on a patient or performing a surgery on the wrong patient. It also includes leaving foreign objects in a person's body following a surgery.

Care management events, on the other hand, include medication errors, the unsafe administration of blood products, birth injuries in low risk situations and mix-ups with artificial insemination. Environmental events can include an electric shock of the patient in the hospital setting, receiving the wrong kind of gas or a burn in a healthcare setting.

When these never events occur, often someone has been negligent. Patients in these situations need to understand their legal right and remedies when it comes to a medical malpractice suit. By speaking with attorney, individuals can receive specific legal advice on how to move forward.
