Does technology keep people safe in a car accident?

Every year, car manufactures release an entirely new set of cars to the market. These cars come with a variety of different features meant to entice buyers in Illinois to purchase the new vehicle. While some of these changes are cosmetics, technology is often used to capture people's attention. While technology can be, in some cases, used to make people's lives easier, it can also make people safer.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, vehicles in the United States are equipped with a variety of technological advances to help keep people safe should a car accident occur. Residents in Illinois should be aware of these safety features when purchasing or riding in a car.

These features include airbags. Airbags deploy in order to keep people safe from injuries in an accident. New cars with five-star safety ratings include advance frontal airbags which help to shield a person's chest, neck and head in case of an accident. These cars also include side airbags and curtains that protect a person's pelvis, chest, neck and head when riding as a passenger in a vehicle.

Newer cars also include electronic warnings that help individuals recognize when an accident may occur. Lane departure warnings monitor road markings and notify drivers if a car is drifting. These cars also include electronics stability controls which help maintain vehicle control. Other cars also include forward collision warnings that caution drivers of an impending collision.

While these safety features may help to avoid a car accident and minimize damage should one occur, they cannot prevent every injury. When a car accident occurs, and people are injured, car accident victims should understand their legal rights. Victims may have the right to compensation from a negligent driver. An attorney can give specific legal advice to people in these situations.
