Product recall involves millions of packages of frozen food

Whether it is heating frozen vegetables in the microwave for a quick dinner side dish or blending frozen fruit into a morning smoothie, many people in Illinois consume frozen vegetables and fruits on a regular basis. However, these individuals should be wary, as an enormous recall has been issued of packaged frozen vegetables and fruits manufactured by CFR Frozen Foods after it was found that these foods were contaminated with the bacteria listeria. The foods in question were manufactured as far back as two years ago and were distributed to every state of the nation, including Illinois.

The recall is especially complicated as the contaminated foods were sold under as many as 40 brand names at many popular stores, such as Trader Joe's, Target, Safeway and Costco. As of right now, eight individuals have suffered from listeria similar to that found in the contaminated foods, and two individuals have lost their lives -- although in these situations the primary cause of the individuals' deaths was not listeria directly.

The initial recall of 11 types of frozen vegetable products took place back in April. In the beginning of May CFR expanded the recall to include more than 400 of its frozen vegetable and fruit products manufactured beginning in May 2014 at a plant in Washington State, which has since been closed as the company attempts to resolve the issue. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that listeria present in the blood of an individual made ill in 2013 was genetically similar to that found in the recalled foods.

People who eat food contaminated with listeria bacteria can become seriously ill. They may require hospitalization for a period of time, which could bring on financial stress during a time when all they want to focus on is regaining their health. If it is found that the listeria bacteria was introduced to the food during the manufacturing process, sickened individuals may want to determine whether they can pursue a products liability suit against the manufacturer for the damages they suffered.
