More vehicles recalled due to defective airbags

By now, Aurora residents may have heard of the defective Takata airbags that claimed lives worldwide and caused hundreds of injuries since 2014. They may be surprised to find, but vehicles are still being recalled due to this defect.

Recently, Honda Motor, Co., has issued another recall of 772,000 vehicles in the United States. The vehicles were recalled because of defective airbag inflators facing the front passenger seat. As of now, 1.29 million vehicles containing the defective airbags have been recalled.

Honda began recalling vehicles back in December of 2014, when it became apparent that the airbags, when deployed, would send metal pieces flying at passengers, possible killing more people than the collision itself. The airbag inflators have ammonium nitrate in them that creates a small chemical explosion leading the airbags to inflate.

As of right now, in the United States, 10 people have been killed by the defective airbags and 150 people have been injured. Worldwide, 16 people lost their lives due to the defective airbags and 180 people have been injured.

Since so many vehicles containing the defective airbags have been recalled, it could take years before they are all replaced. Nevertheless, those who have Hondas containing the defective airbag inflators can have their vehicles taken to a designated dealership to have the airbag inflator replaced.

It is unfortunate that the very feature in these vehicles that are meant to keep occupants safe is actually a danger to them. While recalling these vehicles is a good move, unfortunately, sometimes, recalls come too little, too late for those already injured or killed due to the defective airbags. When that happens, victims may want to contact a product liability attorney, to see what they can do to be compensated for their losses.
