Record settlement reached in Illinois truck accident case

Imagine suffering an injury so severe that not only did it require surgery to remedy, but also kept one from working. That is what happened to one Illinois woman after she was involved in a truck accident. After filing the lawsuit, however, the woman was able to reach a record-setting settlement.

A lawsuit regarding a 2013 collision involving a flatbed truck has reached a settlement to the tune of $939,000. An Illinois woman and her husband were awarded the settlement after a collision in Saline County, Illinois.

In the collision, a coal truck struck the rear end of a flatbed truck, forcing the truck to swing into oncoming traffic, where it then struck the front of a minivan, operated by the plaintiffs. The woman in the minivan suffered severe ankle injuries. She received care at a number of hospitals and needed a complex surgical procedure to fix her ankle. Due to her injury, she was not able to work.

The woman and her husband sued the coal truck company in 2015. They claimed that the driver of the coal truck failed to stay aware and watch his speed, leading to the collision. Per the woman's attorney, the coal truck driver did not provide any reason as to why he failed to slow down to avoid the collision.

His truck carrying coal weighed 80,000 pounds. The woman's attorney stated that the coal truck drivers were tempted to operate their vehicles negligently to skirt safety measures, so they could make as many deliveries as possible.

It is important to hold truck drivers accountable for wrecks they cause. Moreover, if they were urged by their employers to skirt the law to make more deliveries, their employers should be held accountable too. A successful lawsuit or settlement are ways victims of such accidents can recover compensation for their injuries and hopefully, prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
